The Fisherman’s Retreat is set to release Edition 13 (Ben Nevis), a new addition to their collection of single cask, single malt whiskies. This upcoming whisky will be available for pre-sale starting Friday, 17th November at 10 am.

Edition 13, a Ben Nevis single malt, has reached maturity at just four years of age. This rapid maturation process is attributed to its aging in a first fill American oak, ex-Yalumba fortified wine barrel. The unique size of the cask has facilitated greater contact between the spirit and the wood, contributing to the whisky’s rapid development and transformation.

With an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 54%, Edition 13 is a limited release, with only 173 bottles produced.

Appearance: The whisky exhibits a remarkable color for its age, featuring deep, rich tones of mahogany, orange bronze, and deep red reminiscent of autumnal leaves. The presence of natural oils is notable, creating a slow movement within the glass.

Nose: The aroma of Edition 13 presents a rich and fruity profile, with notes of raisins, figs, and Christmas pudding. Additional swirls of the glass release scents of toffee, bananas, and hints of vanilla and marzipan, making the whisky increasingly intriguing.

Palate: At 54% ABV, the whisky offers bold flavors, starting with a hit of fruitiness, including figs, raisins, and more pronounced vanilla than on the nose. Its sweetness is well-balanced, accompanied by an oily and creamy texture that envelops the mouth, leading to a gentle and lasting finish.

Finish: This whisky is described as flavorsome, maintaining its character from the nose through to the palate. Both the Ben Nevis spirit and the Yalumba Fortified Wine cask have contributed to creating a dram of notable quality. Despite its young age, Edition 13 is positioned to compete with more mature whiskies.

Benromach Distillery, located in Speyside, has introduced a new addition to its Contrasts range, a 12-year-old limited-edition whisky. This release is notable for its double maturation process, which involves aging in both first-fill bourbon barrels and Bordeaux wine casks.

The whisky initially matured in first-fill bourbon barrels before undergoing a final five-year maturation in Bordeaux red wine casks. This process has imparted the whisky with delicate honey and floral notes, along with flavors of zesty tangerine, dark forest fruits, and toasted oak. It also features a medium-bodied finish complemented by Benromach’s signature soft peat smoke.

Keith Cruickshank, Distillery Manager at Benromach, commented on the creation of this new release, emphasizing the depth of flavor achieved through the double maturation process. He noted the balance of sweet, fruity notes with the distillery’s characteristic soft smoke. Cruickshank also highlighted the influence of the double maturation on the whisky’s color, producing a darker, richer dram.

With a 46% ABV strength, this limited-edition whisky is available for purchase through Independent Whisky Specialists, with a recommended retail price of £59.99.

Each Special Edition United Toro box, sized at 6 x 54, contains twenty cigars, with two of these cigars featuring a distinctive yellow foot band. These two complimentary cigars are intended to be shared with veterans as a token of gratitude and appreciation.

This initiative is part of United Cigars’ ongoing commitment to supporting veterans and the broader community. Each box of United Cigars includes a star cut from a weathered U.S. flag, sourced in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Stars For Our Troops. These stars are placed in every box as a reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and first responders.

Oliver Nivaud, Director of Operations for United Cigars, commented on the release, stating that the Special Edition United Toro cigars symbolize the company’s deep appreciation for those who have served the country. He emphasized that honoring veterans is a continuous commitment for United Cigars.

The MSRP for a single Special Edition United Toro is $8.50, and a twenty count box is priced at $153, inclusive of the two complimentary cigars.

Selected Tobacco has announced that the Alfonso Gran Selección cigars, showcased at PCA 2023 in Las Vegas, are now shipping to authorized retailers. This line is a follow-up to the Alfonso Añejo released in 2022. The cigars are presented in decorative, cedar-lined boxes containing 25 cigars each and are available in five sizes: Exclusivos (6 x 54 Torpedo), Preciosos (7 1/2 x 40), Estelares (5 1/2 x 54), Enormes (6 1/2 x 60), and Grandiosos (8 x 50).

The Alfonso Gran Selección cigars are noted for their post-roll aging process, a hallmark of Selected Tobacco products. The cigars undergo aging in rooms lined with different types of cedar from around the world. This process takes five years for the Alfonso Gran Selección, with final aging conducted in rooms lined with French Oak. This method of using French Oak in the aging process was also employed for the Alfonso Añejo and Byron 1850 lines.

Nelson Alfonso, Owner of Selected Tobacco, mentioned the positive outcomes of their experimentation with French Oak aging, highlighting the Alfonso Gran Selección as an example of the company’s commitment to patience and exploration in cigar making.

The cigars will be sold in hand-crafted dark lacquered dress boxes, each containing 25 cigars, with a limited production of 5,000 cigars per size. The origin of Alfonso Gran Selección is Costa Rica, with production at the Tabacos de Costa Rica factory. The cigars feature an Ecuador Habano wrapper, a Peruvian binder, and fillers from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. The MSRP ranges from $42 to $50 per single cigar. The total production is 5,000 cigars per size, equating to 200 boxes of 25 per size.
