Tampa’s annual Gasparilla festival is set to be celebrated with a unique offering from J.C. Newman, a Tampa-based cigar manufacturer. For the third consecutive year, the company will release a special cigar exclusive to Tampa in conjunction with the city’s renowned Gasparilla festival.

The 2024 edition, named the José Gaspar, is a 6 1/2 x 52 torpedo. This cigar features an Ecuadorian habano wrapper, paired with a Nicaraguan binder and fillers. This release follows the previous year’s 6 x 54 toro extra and maintains the same price point, with a suggested retail price of $8 per cigar. However, production is limited to 2,000 packs, each containing five cigars.

Availability of the José Gaspar 2024 is exclusive to select retailers in Tampa, ensuring local enthusiasts have the opportunity to experience this special edition. The retailers include well-known establishments such as Casa de Montecristo, Cigar City Brewery Co., The Columbia, and several others, including the J.C. Newman Cigar Museum and Factory Store.

The cigar’s name, José Gaspar, is a nod to the legendary pirate figure associated with the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, a significant cultural event in Tampa. The festival, celebrated annually in late January and lasting into March, includes major parades and various events, drawing inspiration from the mythical pirate José Gaspar. Despite his fame, historical evidence of Gaspar’s existence remains elusive.

Drew Newman, the fourth-generation owner of J.C. Newman, remarks on the connection between the cigar and the Gasparilla tradition. He notes the legacy of José Gaspar as a formidable figure in the Gulf of Mexico during the late 1700s, highlighting the cigar as a tribute to both his legend and the Gasparilla festivities.

With this release, J.C. Newman continues its tradition of crafting cigars that resonate with Tampa’s cultural heritage, particularly the spirited celebration of Gasparilla.

Davidoff has reintroduced the Winston Churchill The Late Hour Petit Panetela, initially launched in 2020 as a limited edition. This cigar, previously available only in international markets, is now a part of the regular production line and accessible globally, including in American stores.

The Petit Panetela is a 4 x 38 petite corona vitola, featuring an Ecuadorian habano oscuro wrapper and a Mexican San Andrés negro binder. The blend comprises Dominican olor, piloto, and San Vicente fillers, along with Sumatran tobacco and Nicaraguan leaves from Condega and Estelí. Notably, the Condega leaves are aged in Scotch whisky casks. Differentiating from other sizes in the series, this variant is a mixed filler cigar, using whole leaf wrapper and binder, but with a filler composed of leftover tobacco cuts.

Pricing and Packaging

Each cigar is priced at $10.10 and is available in tins of four cigars.

Davidoff Winston Churchill-Branded Humidors

Accompanying the cigar release are two new humidors. The Davidoff Winston Churchill The Raconteur Primos Humidor, designed to hold 25-35 cigars, measures 10.98 x 9.41 x 4.25 inches. It features an oak exterior and anigre wood interior, with a Davidoff Slim Regulator and four dividers. The lid displays the Winston Churchill silhouette logo and text from his book, “My Early Life.” It is priced at $2,600.

The larger Davidoff Winston Churchill The Raconteur Ambassador Humidor can accommodate 70-80 cigars. It measures 15.1 x 9.45 x 5.63 inches and has a black tulipwood exterior with an anigre wood interior. This humidor includes a Davidoff Slim regulator and a removable tray, with a price of $3,400. Both humidors are manufactured in France, and a limited number of 40 units of each will be available in U.S. stores.

In contrast to other Year of the Dragon cigars announced by brands like Davidoff, Gurkha, Maya Selva, and VegaFina, Oliva’s Year of the Dragon will be exclusively sold through China Duty Free Group.

Availability and Pricing

The cigar is priced at $35 each, with boxes containing 10 cigars available at $350. Oliva has limited the production to 1,500 boxes of 10 cigars each. These cigars are expected to be available for purchase starting mid-February.

Caldwell Cigar Co. has expanded its Blind Man’s Bluff Connecticut and Maduro blends by introducing a sweet tip variant. This limited release, unveiled earlier this month, maintains the same blend, pricing, and sizes as their non-sweetened counterparts. The only modifications are found in the packaging.

The sweet tip versions are distinguished by boxes labeled “ST” to signify the sweetened tip. The Connecticut ST variant is presented in orange boxes, while the Maduro ST variant is enclosed in blue boxes. Both variations are available in three sizes:

Meanwhile, the Blind Man’s Bluff Maduro ST boasts a Pennsylvania broadleaf wrapper, Sumatran binder, and fillers from the Dominican Republic. Both blends are meticulously crafted at Davidoff’s Diadema Cigars de Honduras S.A. factory in Danlí, Honduras—the same facility responsible for producing the regular versions of each blend.

Caldwell Cigar Co. decided on a limited release, unveiling 250 boxes of each SKU. The company’s founder, Robert Caldwell, mentioned that the possibility of future releases is still under consideration, leaving the door open for more in the future.

The Director of Operations at United Cigars mentioned the collaboration with the Pearse family and their commitment to the cigar industry. The partnership aims to make The Ariston a notable spot for refined leisure in Downtown Nashville.
