October 25, 2012 (Atlanta, GA) — Primer Mundo Cigar Company, makers of El Primer Mundo premium boutique cigars, announces the beginning of their Preferred Merchants Program for their Little Havana Series, which encompasses their line of cigars made at the famed Titan de Bronze Cigar Factory on Calle Ocho in Maimi, FL.
EPM’s Little Havana Series—which includes the Liga Miami, Epifania and current limited edition line Clase Reserva—has been a very exciting project for this small batch cigar maker. Following the release of the Liga Miami in 2010, the EPM line has received consistent commendation and acclaim throughout the market place. With the addition of the Epifania in 2011, EPM’s Little Havana Series became one of the most sought after small batch boutique lines on the market. Concurrently, the storied factory on Calle Ocho where EPM produces their Little Havana Series has experienced significant attention as well. Titan de Bronze is now producing cigars for entities such as Miami Cigar Company, Padilla Cigars, and La Palina Cigars. EPM’s Little Havana Series—along with the other lines being made at Titan de Bronze—have received stellar reviews and ratings, and have solidified the ultra-premium boutique factory as one of the finest makers of premium boutique cigars in the business.
Primer Mundo Cigar Company is committed to balancing production with the growing demand; moving to a Preferred Merchant model will better enable them to accomplish this goal. By initially offering Preferred Merchant status to 100 accounts nationwide, EPM will be better positioned to balance order demands with production demands with Titan de Bronze.
EPM also launched their La Hermandad line this summer, which is made with Abe Flores at PDR Cigars in the Dominican Republic. La Hermandad has experienced a very strong reception from the marketplace and is now hitting shelves nationwide. With a strong focus on moving La Hermandad to the top of their production allocation, EPM is excited to be able to offer their most ardent retailers the opportunity to enjoy a greater level of exclusivity with the Little Havana Series.
“I’ve been very excited about the product we’ve been able to do in Miami and am very honored that we have so many retailers that appreciate the line,” says Sean Williams, President of Primer Mundo Cigar Company. “Titan has really exploded with a number of larger companies wanting to work with them. It’s a terrific thing. Sandy Cobas has truly built a great factory down there and Willy Herrera created some breakout blends before heading to Drew Estates that just took things to another level. Sandy’s doing a great job of integrating the increase production and we’re still cranking out some great blends.” Sean adds, “It’s important that we keep things in balance because it’s a very small factory and that’s what allows us to put out truly special cigars.”
The Preferred Merchant Program for EPM’s Little Havana Series, along with the growth of their La Hermandad Line, will continue to strengthen EPM’s status as one of the most promising true small batch boutique brands in the marketplace.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Releases Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bourbon

FRANKFORT, FRANKLIN COUNTY, KY (Oct. 2012) – Buffalo Trace Distillery pays homage to former Distillery owner E. H. Taylor, Jr. with a small batch, Bottled-In-Bond, 100 proof bourbon whiskey aged in Taylor’s warehouse.

Taylor built his iconic brick warehouse for barrel aging in 1881 and the Warehouse is still in use today. After seven years on the sixth floor, his namesake bourbon whiskey tastes of caramel corn sweetness, mingled with butterscotch and licorice. The aftertaste is a soft mouth-feel that turns into subtle spices of pepper and tobacco.

The Small Batch Bourbon is the sixth and latest release in the line of the E. H. Taylor, Jr. collection of whiskeys, rounding out the collection of Old Fashioned Sour Mash Bourbon, Single Barrel Bourbon, Warehouse C Tornado Surviving Bourbon, Barrel Proof Bourbon and Straight Rye Whiskey. The Taylor collection was first released in early 2011. Like the previous five releases, this whiskey will have very limited availability and will be packaged in a vintage label and canister reminiscent of Taylor’s bottles over one hundred years ago.

“We’ve had a tremendous response to our E. H. Taylor, Jr. whiskeys,” said Kris Comstock, Bourbon marketing director. “We’re honored to pay tribute to a pioneer and legend like Taylor.”

Edmund Haynes Taylor is widely considered one of the founding fathers of the bourbon industry, fighting for the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, nearly three decades after he purchased the distillery that is known today as the Buffalo Trace Distillery. During his time, Taylor implemented several innovative methods still used today by Buffalo Trace, such as climate controlled aging warehouses. In addition to his bourbon interests, Taylor had political ties. He was the great-nephew of President Zachary Taylor and elected the mayor of Frankfort, state representative to the Kentucky General Assembly and a member of the State Senate.

The inaugural bottling of Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey will be available in November. The suggested retail price is $39.99 per 750ml bottle.

The Balvenie Releases the Sixth Batch in the Handcrafted Tun 1401 Series

NEW YORK, Oct. 19, 2012 — /PRNewswire/ —  The Balvenie, the world’s most handcrafted Single Malt Scotch Whisky, introduces another exceptional whisky in the celebrated Tun 1401 range, The Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6, available in most states nationwide beginning October 2012.  Crafted by the industry’s longest-serving Malt Master, David Stewart, the limited-edition Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6 is the second batch to be released exclusively in the United States.

Inspired by and produced in one of the oldest warehouses at The Balvenie Distillery, Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6 features liquid that has matured in nine different casks. The special vatting is a combination of seven traditional whisky casks and two sherry butts, finished in the legendary Tun 1401 – a traditional oak marrying vessel, in which the finest aged casks from the distillery warehouses are combined.  The ages of the rare casks span a number of decades and have been hand-selected by David Stewart and cared for by the distillery’s onsite team of coopers.

‘The Balvenie is privileged to have some the rarest whisky maturing at our distillery,” said David Stewart, Balvenie Malt Master. “The Balvenie is unique among whiskies in that it maintains complete control of all the rare crafts that go into creating our special single malt Scotch whisky.  Five rare crafts and a long wait have gone into making the complex Tun 1401 Batch 6, and it is important that this single malt meets the expectations of what has become a sought after release for The Balvenie drinker and whisky enthusiasts in the United States.”

The sixth batch in the Tun 1401 series is an unrepeatable marriage of single malt that is fragrant and fruity with barley sugar sweetness and soft vanilla. The liquid is sweet at the start, followed by a luscious explosion of tangy citrus and gentle spices. Notes of honey combined with rich vanilla syrup and hints of oak tannin give a rich finish with a lingering sweetness.

The Balvenie Tun 1401 Batch 6 has an ABV of 49.8% and a recommended retail price of $250.00.

The first batch of Tun 1401 was released in 2011, for sale only at The Balvenie Speyside Distillery while other batches have been available in select markets around the world. The US exclusive release of Tun 1401 Batch 6 follows the award winning Tun 1401 Batch 3, which won the IWSC Trophy and Gold medal in 2011. Judges were impressed with the liquid’s intensely aromatic and beautifully balanced flavors, proclaiming it a very interesting whisky.

New Lounge on the Block: R&R Cigars (Tuscaloosa, AL)

Tuscaloosa News just ran a story recently on R&R Cigars, a new cigar hangout that opened in January in Tuscaloosa, AL. The opening of the shop is good news for all of us, as it counts as just one more hang-out for people who love to puff on fine tobacco while they are traveling.

From the looks of it, the shop has a great selection, and they have really gone out of their way to create a relaxed environment. One of the fascinating things to me is that it looks like it is based out of a house, or a building that looks like one anyway (pictured above). That certainly would feel out of place in New York City, but hey no one is judging.

Anyway, a hat tip to the owners of the soon to open new shop. Way to support a great hobby and community. Best of luck to you. If you are in Alabama, give them a visit!

October 22, 2012 (Fort Lauderdale, FL) – Gurkha Cigar Group, Inc., makers of the super premium cigar brand Gurkha, was recently awarded a prestigious Golden Label Award for the printing, design, innovation and technical execution of the 125th Anniversary cigar band.

The coveted Golden Label Award ceremony was held at the contemporary Vienna Platinum Center in Vienna, Austria, organized by Brigl & Bergmeister, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of label and paper products. Out of 12,000 entries, Gurkha reigned highest cigar brand out of all 5 categories. Working in close collaboration with TSO printers (Holland), the Gurkha 125th Anniversary band artwork features a detailed and ornate design, incorporating state of the art printing techniques to emphasize the strong logo and identity of the Gurkha brand.

“We are very honored to receive this award,” said Kaizad Hansotia, Chairman of Gurkha Cigar Group. “This is even more special as this year celebrates 125th Anniversary of the Gurkha Cigar. The artwork took over a year to develop, where the goal was to create an intricate design that highlighted the strong tradition and authenticity of the brand”.

The Gurkha 125th cigar blend is also an award winner, having recently received the company’s highest ever rating of 96’ points. The unique blend features an oily Brazilian Cubra wrapper, accompanied by an Ecuadorian, Habano binder and a complex combination of Nicaraguan, Brazilian and Dominican fillers. This intriguing medium bodied cigar encompasses a very smooth and complex taste profile, with flavorful notes of rich tobacco and subtle hints of sweet spice, vanilla and chestnut. After much anticipation, the 125th Anniversary will be shipping to cigar stores nationwide in the coming weeks!

World renowned for their packaging and design, this is the second award that the Gurkha Cigar group has won in 2012 for their design and artwork, having already won the SAPPI European Printing Award for the printing, design and execution of the popular Gurkha ‘Royal Challenge’ artwork and crest.
