Kicking off the summer at Refugio Cigar House!

Oh Thursday, June 2nd, FTNYCers got together for their first HERF of the summer.  We met at Refugio Cigar House out in Brooklyn and enjoyed Mike Lopez’s incredible hospitality, as well as a few of his new blends.  It was also great to see so many new faces. You can find pictures of the event on our Facebook page.

The evening kicked off at around 7:00pm with a few members trickling in.  With all of the beautiful sunlight, I couldn’t resist bringing my home sound system to crank up Latin music. At around 8pm, a professional cigar roller from the Dominican Republic dropped by to roll fresh cigars for us for the rest of the night. At this point we had about 20 people, making for a lot of great conversation. Cigars on hand ranged from 5 Vegas, Perdomo, 601, CAO, Davidoff and of course the Refugio blends. If you haven’t tried Refugio’s Habano blend, give it a shot – it is excellent.

Mike and a few other FTNYC members also brought tons of drinks. Mike also bought pizza from his favorite Brooklyn shop to share with everyone else.  Unfortuntaly, I was so busy talking I didn’t have a chance to grab a slice. Next time I’ll be a bit more proactive. We also had Kevin Joyce from Maraya Cigar show up, which was a real treat. If you haven’t been to his shop on Orchard Street, be sure to drop by – they produce two fantastic house blends.

At the end of the night we had a cigar raffle, more music, more drinks, and a few more cigars. All in all, it was a great kickoff to what’s going to be a summer full of events. If you’re interested in coming to an event, sign up for the event mailing list on the top right of this page!

Announcement, Smoking Location Legal smoking park, Samuel Paley Park

A (Legal) Cigar Smoker Sanctuary: Samuel Paley Park

After dropping by work today, I was seduced by the perfect summer weather and my humidor into a cigar smoking mood.  I work in Midtown, and for that reason usually go to Bryant Park to kick back to smoke and people watch. Unfortunately, that doesn’t fly with the NYC government now that the NYC smoking ban is in effect.  I almost despaired of having any easy access to somewhere to smoke my selection (a cheap La Finca) – until I remembered Samuel Paley park, located on 53rd street between 5th and Madison.

Paley park is the last legal park to smoke at in NYC, and it is legal because the park is privately owned. After seeing some pictures and reading a few articles, I knew the park was pretty, but I honestly wasn’t prepared for just how beautiful it really is. The park is wedged between two large skyscrapers, and fields dozens of chairs with small tables, a gorgeous waterfall, and a security guard that also enforces park rules (more on that below).

To understand why the park still allows smoking, one must look to none other than Samuel Paley himself. Cigar Coop does a great job explaining, writing that, ” The park was Paley Park was financed by the William S. Paley Foundation and was named after Bill Paley’s grandfather – Samuel Paley.  Samuel Paley was the person who created the original La Palina Cigars over a century ago.”

The park is open to smokers all 7 days of the week, but does close in the evening. If you are going to smoke at the park, here are a few tips:

  1. Be courteous to others. If there is a large group of non-smokers enjoying the shade, don’t sit next to them and blow smoke in their faces. I understand there are some cigar smokers that might reject this out of hand as the public democratically banned smoking everywhere else. Still, let’s not collectively abandon common courtesy as a community. That being said, if someone reminds you about the ban, be sure to help keep our citizens informed by letting them know that the park is private.
  2. Do not spit or ash cigars on tables/ground. While I was smoking, I noticed that the security guard is also in charge of keeping the space clean. He was intentional to clean up anything that guests left on the ground, including cigarette butts and ash. So, use the ash trays conveniently located around the park (there are three or four). Also, some cigar smokers make a habit of spitting every now and again, especially with a harsh cigar. Do not spit. Another cigar smoker sitting nearby spit on the ground and was immediately reminded by the guard that the park is private and has high standards of cleanliness.
  3. Keep your feet off of chairs. The guard at the park was very intentional to remind guests that seats are for butts, not shoes.

But don’t let that list of rules fool you. The park is incredibly relaxed, and conveniently shielded from wind that can cause a less than satisfying smoking experience.  So what are you waiting for? Grab some friends and drop by Paley park for a smoke!

Globe-Trotter and Nat Sherman Design A Dream Humidor

In the past few weeks, the world-famous Nat Sherman tobacco store has sought to increase its portfolio of unique cigar, fashion, and comfort related items. A couple of months back, the shop on 42nd and 5th avenue renovated its downstairs smoking lounge with furniture made exclusively by Esquire. The furniture is unique and incredibly comfortable from my experience, though the handful of Nat Sherman regulars I’ve spoken to have given the new furniture (and layout) mixed reviews.
In any case, I’ve just been informed of another development, namely a partnership between Nat Sherman and Globe-Trotter accessories. The two brands have collaborated to design an elegant and stylish limited edition portable humidor. Below is the full explanation, provided by Nat Sherman:
~~~
To honor the 80th Anniversary of New York’s finest Tobacco shop, Nat Sherman, Globe-Trotter has designed an exclusive humidor – a first in Globe-Trotter’s 114 year old history. A total of 25 humidors will be hitting Nat Sherman’s flag-ship store this week for a limited time only. Each case will have a commemorative plaque that states the number – i.e. 1 of 25, 2 of 25 etc.
Taking it’s cue from Globe-Trotter’s iconic centenary collection, the Nat Sherman Humidor features Colonial Brown Vulcan fibre, accented with a dark brown leather handle and signature corners riveted with gold. The Nat Sherman tone-on tone logo is discreetly placed on the humidor, reinforcing the brand’s history, dating back to 1930. The inside of the handsome case is lined with paper backed Oatmeal and Spanish cedar wood, as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing, both help to maintain the cigars delicate humidity levels and support the natural ageing process.
The Background.
Are you familiar with luxury suitcase company Globe-Trotter? Globe-Trotter was established in 1897 and remains a uniquely hand made product. Skilfully crafted from Vulcan Fibre, paper-backed cloth lining and leather trimming at the Globe-Trotter factory in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. Vulcan Fibre is an exclusive patented material invented in Britain during the 1850s. As light as aluminium and as strong as leather, Globe-Trotter is the only manufacturer of cases made from Vulcan Fibre.
Are you familiar with Nat Sherman? As the nation dug its way out of the great depression in 1930, Nat Sherman was busy opening New York’s’ finest tobacco shop. Today, the company has grown from those humble beginnings into one of the most recognized and respected names in the worldwide tobacco industry.
The Timing.
The ‘Globe-Trotter for Nat Sherman’ humidor is launching now and will be sold exclusively at the Nat Sherman store at 12 E 42nd Street.
Cigar Review: Caballeros Dominican Candycane Churchill
Caballeros Dominican Candy Cane
In my few years of smoking cigars, one fact I’ve become aware of is that there are a lot of great cigars on the market.  I always get get excited, however, when I get a chance to try a cigar produced by a local New York City brand.  Based in Queens, Caballeros cigars are owned and operated by Richie Clemente and Jose Laboy. The Caballeros’ double-wrapped all Dominican candy cane is the first Caballeros cigar that I’ll be reviewing. It is one of many of Caballeros’ blends, and I found it to be a really unique and enjoyable cigar with great construction.
Blend specifics:
  • Wrapper: Double-wrapped Maduro and Natural leafs (Dominican)
  • Binder: Dominican
  • Filler: Dominican
Appearance & Construction:
I know a bit about how Caballeros cigars are put together and have been generally pretty pleased with their construction. This particular blend is no exception. The cigar is very well constructed, though there are a few minor imperfections on the Maduro wrapper. The cigar is triple-capped and is springy to the touch. The wrappers are very smooth with minimal veins, providing for a pretty attractive look.  This blend doesn’t currently have the normal Caballeros band – hopefully they start adding that in the future.  The foot of the cigar smells of earth, natural tobacco, and a nut. The draw is perfect.
Taste & Smoking Characteristics:
Because of the double wrapper, this cigar provides a pretty interesting smoke. On one hand there is an earthy, sweet taste typical of some Maduros.  These tastes are balanced out by a creamy nuttiness. It might sound like a bizarre combination, but I really enjoyed it. The cigar is mild-medium bodied and doesn’t change a whole lot throughout the course of the smoke, with the exception of nutiness being introduced around halfway through the cigar. The cigar produces large volumes of smoke and is generally a tasty cigar.
Conclusion:
Double wrapped cigars can tend to be a bit of a challenge. In the past I’ve had barber pole cigars that haven’t worked out so well. Thankfully, Caballeros got this blend right and as a result I recommend trying one if you get the chance.
Final Grade: B+
