Cigar Photo: Old Veteran Loves His Cigar

A photo is worth a thousands words. The photo below of a WWI vet is no different, though you might say it is worth a thousand cigars as well. The following is a post that dropped in the LA Times on November 7th, 2012. The article is basically a redux of an earlier article published all the way back in 1988.

You can find the full article here, and can read some highlights below. Props and thanks to Scott Harrison for writing it.

Sept. 13, 1988: Martin De Young, 100, says his greatest pleasure in life is smoking a cigar. De Young, a resident of the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, says he cut down to three a day, one after each meal.

Los Angeles Times columnist Charles Hillinger took the portrait of De Young, then wrote in a Nov. 25, 1988, column:

YOUNTVILLE, Calif. – The two World War I Army veterans sat side by side at the 40th annual Veterans of Foreign Wars Picnic and engaged in lively conversation.

“You got some age on me,” Martin De Young said to Homer Holmes, who turned 100 last February. De Young celebrated his 100th birthday in May.

“How come you live so long?” Holmes asked his younger friend.

“It’s the cigars,” De Young laughed, puffing away and revealing a toothless smile. “Cigars are the greatest pleasure of my life now. I smoke three White Owls a day, one after each meal.”

Asked if smoking isn’t dangerous to his health. De Young laughed and replied: “You must be kidding. I’ve been smoking cigars 85 years.”

Both men are residents of the Veterans Home of California, which houses 1,275 veterans of both world wars, the Korean conflict and Vietnam.

Masked Robber Wields Sawed-Off Shotgun in Daring $8 Cigar Heist

The people of Forks Township, Pennsylvania can rest easy now that Tariq Jahad Yusuf Jackson, 22, has been arrested for allegedly suiting up in a ski mask and gloves, arming himself with a sawed-off shotgun, and robbing the local “Chubby’s Convenience Store” of some cash and $8 in Black & Mild cigars.  He then escaped via bicycle into the early morning darkness.

Sinister.

So how did this master-mind plan for his dramatic robbery? According to the article, Jackson visited the store six and a half hours before the robbery to buy some Black & Milds and ask the employee what time the store would open the next morning. You’ve gotta hand it to him for using his noggin’!

Remind you of anyone?

A few more facts from the story, first reported by Patch news:

  • “Jackson’s apparent getaway vehicle was a bicycle. Police used the bike’s tire tracks to point them in the direction of Jackson’s home.”
  • “His home at 2305 Jamie Court is .76 miles from Chubby’s, according to mapquest.com.”
  • “He stole several packs of Black & Mild cigars from a display shelf, “being very selective in only taking said listed brand of cigar.” The cigars are valued at about $8.”

So, after we put the facts together, what do we have? Other than a rather hilarious story, I honestly don’t know. But it’s glad to know that the spirit of Rocco from Boondock Saints is still alive and well.

Jackson is being held at Northampton County Prison on $100,000 bail.

Bunnahabhain Unveils Rare 40-Year Islay

Bunnahabhain has announced that it will release a one-off rare single malt that has lain undiscovered for four decades at the Islay distillery.

Bunnahabhain distillery, which is located on the north-east of the isle, will release only 750 bottles, which will be individually numbered and hand signed.

Hidden for 40 years, the whisky quietly matured until Master Distiller, Ian MacMillan, discovered the casks listed in the distillery ledgers: “It was an exhilarating moment to stumble on such a special find,” he said. “There are very few 40 year old Islays and unlike any other, Bunnahabhain’s taste is considered unique because the distillery does not heavily peat the fine malted barley.”

The Master Distiller recognised the significance of the discovery after finding the ‘Turney’ casks, which were filled with the precious Bunnahabhain malt over 40 years ago by eminent Glasgow wine merchants, J G Turney, and renowned for being the highest standard of quality.
Michelle Lansdowne, Senior Brand Manager at Burn Stewart, added: “ We are expecting a good deal of market interest in the 40 YO and with such limited availability of this one-off prestige bottling, it is sure to appeal to international collectors of rare malts.”

To capture the extraordinary journey, Bunnahabhain commissioned renowned illustrator, Iain McIntosh, to retrace the voyage through the specially designed labels. Each bottle is presented in a bespoke oak gift box containing a secret compartment that reveals hidden designs replicating the ‘Journey of Discovery.’

The multi-award winning Bunnahabhain is the flagship malt whisky from Burn Stewart Distillers and is exported to over 30 countries globally. Unlike its neighbouring distilleries on the Island, Bunnahabhain embodies “the gentle taste of Islay”, as it is the only non-peated Islay malt.

Bunnahabhain 40 YO
RRP: £1,999
Unchill-filtered (41.7% ABV)

Notes:

• Situated on the northern shore of Islay, Bunnahabhain Distillery was founded in 1881 by William Robertson and brothers James and William Greenless
• Bunnahabhain is Gaelic for ‘mouth of the river’ and the distillery is situated right at the shoreline, close to where the Margadale River flows into Bunnahabhain Bay
• In 2003 Bunnahabhain was sold to Burn Stewart Distilleries for £10million. Today, production stands at 2.5million litres a year. Of this, 21,000 casks are kept at the distillery for maturation and the resultant whisky is used for the Black Bottle blend and for bottling as Bunnahabhain single malt

Great King Street Announces Availability of New York Blend

We are delighted to announce the release of the first in a series of one-off, regional Scotch whisky blends under the Great King Street label: the “New York Blend”. Created for the 2012 New York Whisky Fest, the whisky is dedicated to Patrick J. Duffy, the man who legend has it was responsible for the first branded and bottled Scotch whisky to arrive in New York in 1894. The blend is based on an actual recipe from the 1890s.
John Glaser has created only 1,800 bottles of this unique, smoky, full-flavoured Blended Scotch whisky. The New York Blend uses lots of peaty single malts, plenty of sherry cask-aged single malts, and a much higher proportion of malt to grain whisky (80%/20%) than is typically used today. Just as the finest blending houses would have done in 1894.

Bottled at a higher strength of 46%, Great King Street – New York Blend will only be available in the US, primarily in the New York Metropolitan area, following its launch on Saturday 27th October. However, we are also offering a few bottles for sale on an exclusive basis from our UK-based web shop so if you would like to pick up a bottle, don’t delay!
