Scotch Review: The Macallan 12 Year

the macallan 12 year

So, my usual bourbon aficionados and I were checking out at our usual store in Tampa when we spotted this prominently placed on a display. The red box immediately caught our eye, and we’ve had some good experiences with sherry cask finishes, so, we picked it up and enjoyed it so much we thought it deserved its own review.

Spirit Info

  • Distillery: The Macallan Distillers LTD
  • Spirit: Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskey (matured in selected sherry oak casks from Jerez, Spain)
  • Age: 12 Years
  • ABV: 43%
  • Purchase Price: $57.99

Nose

A strong peat, charcoal, and sweet sherry scent immediately overtake the nose, followed by a light aroma of orange peel and floral-honey.

Palate

The sherry immediately hits you full-force and recedes into the typical Macallan single malt flavors of oaky-peat and smoky-charcoal. Undertones of citrus and dried cherries make a pleasant appearance, peaking at the middle of the taste.

Afterglow

For having such a bold flavor, the afterglow is surprisingly light. Honey and floral flavors stay on the tongue with slight tones of sherry and charcoal in the background.

Conclusion

Overall, it was a rather enjoyable pour. The depth of flavor and complexity added by the sherry oak cask finish is a wonderful addition to an already established selection. There is a very slight bite that comes a second or two after it hits the tongue, but it fades quickly and with it comes that beautiful complexity of competing flavors.

Barclay Rex Pearl Street: A New Form, Same Substance

Barclay Rex Pearl Street

Picture, if you can, a traditional four-story building with a brick-red and beige facade packed against an enormous modern white office building-turned residential space. If you can picture this, then you have just visualized the brand new Barclay Rex lounge at 126 Pearl Street in the City’s Financial District.

After a year-and- a-half of anticipation and deprivation of a much-needed lounge in the area, I was just one of the countless Barclay fans who anxiously rushed downtown to see if the wait was worth it.

Inside,  the tasteful brick wall is mostly fronted by large, dark wood cabinets sporting the finest cufflinks, butane lighters, hats, hand-made pipes, and pipe tobacco. Longtime Barclay hostess Joanna, whom I’ve known since the Broad Street days, approaches from the brand new wood-and- stone counter with a genuine smile and welcomes me to the new location.

She helps me pick my jaw back up off the floor and informs me that the lounge is actually still being worked on; hence the construction equipment outside; The shop’s “members only” lounge, which takes up the entire second floor of the building, is due to be finished in October.

Joanna escorts me beyond the pipe tobacco counter to the store’s brand new walk-in humidor. It’s a magnificent sight to behold; Barclay’s same diverse and fairly-priced selection is there, per the usual, but with fantastic new product displays gilded in beige, precision-cut wood. And, of course, there’s the old familiar sliding ladders that we all know and love. I pick up my smoke and pay for it. Sadly, City Hall no longer permits Barclay to sell coffee, nor does it allow Barclay a liquor license. However, they can still sell sodas and waters; and Joanna kindly hands me a Coke from a brand new high-tech fridge installed into the counter.

Barclay Rex Pearl Street

Joanna then directs me to the main lounge downstairs. It’s a fresh, stone tile-floored sanctuary, complete with outlets, matching orange and black comfy chairs, cityscape murals on the walls, and two big screen TV’s, with the Olympics on, hung up against a brick wall. I’m quickly joined by a group of regulars. To my relief, the lounge remains tranquil and quiet, with the regulars being unusually careful to maintain a calm atmosphere. Even during conversations, I can still clearly hear “I Can’t Tell You Why” and “You’re the Inspiration” over the speakers. This atmosphere of quiet consideration seals the deal for me; it picks up right where Broad Street left off.

I eventually make my way back up to the main floor to finish my Padrón Series Delicias 46 x 4 ⅞. Barclay owner Vinny Nastri is on location today, and he kindly extends his hand to shake, recognizing me from my previous visits. This new location represents a new chapter in Barclay Rex’s story, 106 years and counting; this is the first time the company has owned an entire building, and Vinny expresses his hopes that this new arrangement will last longer than the other locations did, which was decades at a time. Well, Vinny with a new abundance of smoking space and technology to supplement your family’s traditions of hospitality, affordability, and variety, I think the latest Barclay Rex location is here to stay. Keep up the good smoke!

Cigar Journal, an international cigar industry magazine, recently featured Fine Tobacco NYC in their summer 2016 magazine edition.  The feature article comes after over five years and more than 80 cigar events all over New York City hosted by Fine Tobacco NYC.

When David, Kelvin and I started holding cigar events at local cigar shops in New York City in 2010, we had one goal: create a space where we could feature the best brands, educate new cigar smokers, and introduce like-minded people to each other to create lasting friendships. Six years and over 2,000 attendees later, we’ve become the largest in-person cigar group in America. We’re proud to be recognized, because it shows just how far the New York City cigar community has come, even in the face of oppressive city, state, and (recently) federal regulations.

We thank Cigar Journal for their coverage of the New York City cigar community! You can read the articles for yourself by purchasing the Summer edition of Cigar Journal, or clicking on the thumbnails below. You can also download a pdf of the article here.

And a special thank you to the New York City and Tri-State cigar community who make their way to our monthly meetups.

Whiskey Review: Straight Edge American Whiskey

Straight Edge Whiskey

A while back I was fortunate enough to score a bottle of Dave Phinney’s “Slaughterhouse” Whiskey. Dave Phinney as you may or may not know is the famed vintner who created “The Prisoner” an Über California wine blend.  He then sold the company and now makes acclaimed wines from virtually all the major wine producing countries in the world under his Orin Swift label.  Last year he decided to turn his taste for wine into sourced whiskeys. Straight Edge was Dave’s first leap into the whiskey world and his skill in crafting wine doesn’t miss a beat when putting together these whiskeys. Straight Edge is hard to come by and I was lucky to grab a bottle for this review.

Straight Edge much like all of Phinney’s creations catches the eye with creative labeling. Straight Edge as the name implies sports an old style straight edge razor. The red background in the lettering matches the color of the whiskey itself.  In the bottle the whiskey has an attractive almost sherry color to it. Straight Edge is a blend of 5, 7 and 8 year old Bourbon from Kentucky and Tennessee.  It’s finished at Phinney’s facility in Napa Valley using Mercury Head Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. Mercury Head is Orin Swift’s high end expensive Cabernet. I have a bottle of the ’01 Mercury Head and you can see in the picture below the Whiskey and the wine it was barrel finished in.

Here is my review:

Spirit details: Proof 84

Price: $50

Origin: USA

Description: Sherry color in bottle, straight razor on label.

Nose: The nose screams vanilla and wood.

Palate: Upfront lots of vanilla, butterscotch and toasty oak. Midway spice with orange and honey that coats the mouth.

Finish: Real toasty on the finish with vanilla, caramel and a wonderful touch of rye that rounds out the profile.

Conclusion: An extremely well balanced whiskey. While I don’t feel the body was as “weighty” as the Slaughterhouse this whiskey was more nuanced in it’s primary flavors. I attribute this to the aging in Cabernet barrels rather than Bordeaux barrels with Slaughterhouse.  Orin Swift Cellars has diversified their profile with both American Whiskeys. Straight Edge delivers sharp  flavors of vanilla, oak and spice which is what a quality American Whiskey is all about. If you can find a bottle I would grab it as I wish I had more myself. Below is a link to my review of Slaughterhouse if you’d like to compared the two. Enjoy!

Davidoff of Brookfield Place Review: A Timeless-Modern Masterpiece

Davidoff of Geneva’s Brookfield Place lounge is the culmination of the company’s latest efforts to honor their namesake’s forward-thinking legacy. Fittingly embedded inside the inspiringly modern Battery Park City neighborhood, it’s a living, breathing embodiment of Davidoff’s endeavor to both preserve and restyle the cigar experience within the framework of a brave new century.

Upon opening the door, a gentleman in a blue blazer with mother-of-pearl buttons greets me and takes my peacoat and umbrella. He introduces himself as Rudy, a Cuban-American from Miami. He graciously allots me the time to drool over the pristine cufflinks, watches, cigar kits, pipes, and ball point pens prominently displayed in the accessory section.

Having impressed me to the nth degree, Rudy escorts me into the walk-in humidor. Its ceiling is crowned by a row of real Dominican tobacco leaves hanging from the ceiling, which Rudy proudly informs me were delicately and symmetrically laced together entirely by hand. He goes to a special white cedar box set aside on a pedestal and hands me the NYC Downtown, the lounge’s own unique signature cigar. It’s a gorgeous Connecticut leaf Bellicoso whose flavor profile is so rich and multifaceted that it merits its own separate review.

The lounge proper is a relatively compact space, but it’s cleverly laid out to accommodate every type of smoker and smoking experience under the sun; there are big, isolated lounge chairs for the introverted lone wolves, single seats positioned together around coffee tables for friend groups, single seats strategically positioned in front of the flatscreens for the sports fans, and a large triangular couch in the center for the lovers.

A lone wolf enters and takes his seat in the corner, a Padrón and one hand and the Times in another. Across from me are two middle-aged men and a younger man, gathered together to watch the replay of last week’s Heat vs. Hornets game. They’re not quiet, but they’re not loud either, and we all amicably exchange the occasional joke and story while simultaneously respecting each other’s own space. This balance is something of a rarity in my experience, and I’m keen to enjoy every second of it.

The decor is set up to the nines; the furniture is fresh, grey-tinted, and actually comfortable! The walls have mirrors adorned with symmetrical floral designs; the ceiling is rigged with Edisonesque electric lights that radiate a subtle amber tint. It’s a style that Rudy’s lovely coworker Aynsley describes as “Timeless-Modern.”

After a good two hours, I draw the last puffs from the Downtown Belicoso. But the fun doesn’t end there; I spend another two discussing anything and everything with Rudy and Aynsley.

The Brookfield Place lounge definitely does its job. This is a lounge that appeals to a diverse crowd and hosts a most respectful clientele, catered to by an utterly professional staff. So don't think twice, head downtown and pay Rudy and Aynsley a visit; you too will be pleasantly surprised.
